What do friends mean to you?

No man is an island. From the moment we learn how to socialize, we have always been surrounded by people. When we were much younger, we treated our parents as our lifeline. They were the ones who fed us, clothed us and protected us from danger. However, as we grow up, this role is increasingly being replaced by our friends. As parents become less important in their guardianship role over us, we depend more and more on our friends for survival and growth.

What are friends? Friends are definitely not people whom we just know on a superficial level. Those whom we know but not too well are merely acquaintances. Friends, on the other hand, know us well enough to be able to understand our individual strengths and weaknesses, our quirks and eccentricities. Thus, to me, friends must know us well enough to qualify as friends.

Merely knowing and understanding us is still not enough; enemies and foes also know and understand us: they simply utilize this knowledge against us. Friends must also look out for our interests. They must help us see the folly of our actions, and stand by us when we are in trouble. It is only when they can empathize with us can they really be counted as friends. An old saying goes like this: "You are my friend only if you can walk in my moccasins." As such, friends walk in our shoes, see the world through our eyes, but also step out of our perspective so as to show us the truth about ourselves and our world.

Of course, friends also mean companionship. As we grow older, we are more likely to confide in our friends than our parents. They keep us company when we are lonely, share our tears when we are sad, and laugh together with us when we are happy. These are profound roles, but those who can play these roles are our true friends. On a lighter side, they are also a welcomed addition to a movie, a party or just a simple outing. These friends will also be our link to our youth when we are in our sixties and seventies.

It makes perfect sense to have lots of friends. Our survival depends on them. True friends are, however, hard to find. As such, if we have true friends around us, we should acknowledge their existence and treasure them for who they are. (:

Take nobody for granted.
